When the study abroad finally includes the STUDYING part

Okay, guys, it finally hit: MIDTERM WEEK! So when you’ve been so focused on just going abroad and traveling. You can totally forget that you are here to study. My midterm week was brutal. All the assignments and group presentations hit me like a truck. I was having so much fun not worrying about having a single assignment for over 2 months. It was overly stressful, but the week following fall break was motivating.

This cafe, named Kekkos, saw me and my friends the whole week of midterms. We were all so locked in as soon as classes ended for us. The owner is so sweet that he would bring snacks out for us. He would bring chocolate, chips, peanuts, and leftover bread over. I love how he interacts with all of us and even plays music in the back. OH, and he also speaks Spanish, so sometimes we talk to him in Spanish. This was interesting to me, a lot of people here actually learn Spanish as a second language. They say that it is easy to learn. My host brother is currently learning it as well since he travels to Spain a lot. But anyway, back to the topic about the studying part here. Classes are just way different from what I am used to.

This was our setup, shout out to Josh for taking the picture. We were all academic weapons since our flight to Rome was on Thursday, October 23rd. Literally the last day of classes. So I was making sure everything was turned in before I got on the airplane. Most of my classes did presentations and papers for the midterm instead of an exam. I couldn’t believe that a lot of professors waited until the last minute to tell us about projects. I had a group project that was announced on Wednesday, and she told us we would present the following Monday. It was a bit difficult to have like every assignment be due in that week. However, I received my midterm grades back yesterday, and I had one B+ and the rest were A-‘s. I did way better than I thought!!

Here I had my midterm overview for my religion class. I was worried about this class the most because it was a lot of terms to study. The professor was a strict grader, and it reminded me of high school. She took -.5 off because I did not write the term she wanted. But now I know what to expect for finals week and to be more prepared for it. I do enjoy my classes, like my religion class is about Greek mythology with religion. The stories of the Greek gods are really interesting, and I like that we can go to sites/ museums.

Sometimes, while abroad, I do forget that I am also studying out here. The workload is not a lot; however, there are some readings that can be long. But there isn’t an assignment that comes with doing the reading. There also haven’t been quizzes about the readings, only during midterm week. One of my professors said that if you do not like your midterm grade from the exam, you can write a paper to boost your grade. Like, they want you to get a good grade and still enjoy your time here. I appreciate that from professors, they are chill!!

Anyway, here’s a picture of when my religion class took us to the Acropolis. I was able to see the caryatids. This temple is named Erechtheion, and it is beautiful.
